Fighting the Good Fight: How We Can Be the Change

Let’s take the time to share something that we need to hear more of right now:  We can make a difference and we can empower ourselves to fight the negativity and discord that is spreading. If we do not fight the good fight, who will?

We must raise our energy and direct our willpower to meet the challenges we face as nations of this world by working on how we react to the circumstances as they arise and focusing on those qualities that bring us together—not divide.

Many people are wondering how we can possibly make any good happen right now with all the bad stuff that we hear of constantly in the media.

Nayaswami Devi, a modern-day swami traveling the world to share the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda—author of Autobiography of a Yogi, was speaking to a large group of people in India about how powerful it is simply for us not to give up. It takes courage and persistence to make even the smallest of changes. But even these small changes make a ripple that travels far and wide in its effects.

I think that is the main reason that we need to talk more about what we can do…because we don’t want to just give up.

We want to raise our energy and meet the opportunities that come when things are challenging. It really is just a call to our inner qualities that need strengthening–like positivity, kindness, caring, including others, expanding our awareness, courage, loving one another when it is easier to fight with one other.  And overall, remembering that there are so many things that we do — even if they are little things to rise up — have immense power when they come together.

Let us not forget the importance of our own time for introspection, our own time for meditation and practicing yoga– these sorts of things where we can learn to calm ourselves are really important– they have the power to make a change in the people around us. Everything that we do in our own self is fighting the good fight.  And that’s what we can all try to do to make ourselves feel like there is something that can be done.

We don’t have to feel little and that there are too many bad things happening in nearby states — or even in our own communities — that we cannot possibly be of help. With that attitude, the many great things of our time may not ever have been possible. There are examples all around us of how little steps together make great leaps.

Nayaswami Devi’s spiritual partner, Nayaswami Jyotish, recently shared a study done on a group of meditators who moved to Rhode Island. All they did for a whole year was practice their daily meditation, but because it was a small state, they actually made up 2 or 3 % of the total state population. From that year when they began meditating daily, the state saw many things start to happen from this simple practice: crime rates dropped significantly, the weather improved, there was a smaller percentage of unemployment… It illustrated how even big issues within communities and cities can be solved when people tune into their higher Self and thus nurture higher qualities or consciousness that then affects the world around them.

The next time you start thinking about what you can do and start to lose hope, remember that we must fight and we can as individuals make a difference.

The Power of Yes

Raise your energy and give yourself the ability to say, “Yes! I want to wake up early to meditate. I want to do my yoga practice every day. I don’t want to let it slide by. I don’t want to fall into just doing the easy thing.”

Maybe the easy thing is just falling asleep. Or just flipping on the TV. Who knows what it is that we each need to tune into for ourselves? But in those moments we can recall that we have the power to make a difference.

There’s a quote from Harry Potter that embraces this idea well. It shows how we must fight lest darkness rule. (To understand this quote remember Lord Voldemort is the character in the book that represents the force of evil and hunger for power and material gain, and he is not very nice…)

“Lord Voldemort’s gift for spreading discord and enmity is very great. We can fight it only by showing an equally strong bond of friendship and trust. Differences of habit and language are nothing at all if our aims are identical and our hearts are open.”

Let live the power of friendship and cooperation by cultivating the inner Self. That is the highest part of us that knows how important it is to be kind to one another and to cooperate with one other. Especially in times like these it is hard to remember a thought that gives compassion and hope: that we are all, in essence, the Light— it is ignorance that casts a shadow on our understanding.

We must fight for our higher Self to shine through for it is the part of ourselves that knows that giving makes us happier than receiving and that sharing joy is where we ultimately will feel the greatest and most pure joy. And it wants to embrace our unity and not our disharmony with one another or fear of chaos. It is the part of ourselves that is the truest.

Let us spread the message to one another that we are not alone, there is hope, and we can do so much if we only embrace that side of ourselves.

Let us end with this vision for the future, founded in all that is good and what comes when we win the battle for light, peace, and harmony:

Prayer for expanding Love from myself to all my brethren by Paramhansa Yogananda:

O Divine Mother, teach me to use the gift of Thy love, which I feel in my heart, to love the members of my family more than myself. Bless me, that I may love my neighbors more than my family. Expand my heart’s feelings, that I love my country more than my neighbors, and my world and all my human brethren more than my country, neighbors, family, and my own self. Lastly, teach me to love Thee more than anything else, for it is only Thy love that enables me to love everything. Without Thee, I could not love anything or anybody.

Whispers from Eternity

Thank you.
